At the moment, I’m web depressed. Youtube is still blocked in China, and I have produced, filmed and edited a film of two monkeys fighting…and I can’t share it using my favourite video site. Check out a ‘still’ from the epic here:

2009 Chinese New Year Fireworks in Shanghai, China (2009

On the eve of Chinese New Year, when I wasn’t marvelling at China’s menu system, I was lucky enough to watch 10 minutes of INTENSE fireworks, in a small street just off People’s Square (I think it was Fuzhou Lu but I’m not 100% sure).

Here’s the video. DO NOT WATCH IT IF YOU DON’T LIKE FIREWORKS! THERE ARE A LOT IN THIS VIDEO! (Oh, and don’t watch it with cats either. Cats get very scared of fireworks.)

The following is a post about my new mobile phone. Please read and then in the ‘COMMENTS’ section guess how much you think it cost! You can guess in any currency, I’ll work it out…

So…I didn’t plan this…it just happened. I have a new phone! Actually it’s not a phone…it’s a whole new lifesyle…

new phone shanghai fake market!

Ok some backstory…we’ve been browsing Shanghai’s notorious ‘fake market’ (opposite 555 Nan Jing Xi Lu) for a couple of weeks now. I say notorious because the majority of the products they sell are…fake. That said, I suppose if you have a ‘fake market’ and sell ‘fake’ goods, then in effect you’re selling genuine goods…anyway…

new phone shanghai fake market!

Here’s what’s in the box. Phone, battery, spare battery, headphones/handsfree, usb cable, power adapter. So far, so normal. It is ‘dual sim’, so if you call either of my Chinese phone-numbers, it’ll ring. Nobody does ring them, however, but it’s nice to know that if they did, it would.

new phone shanghai fake market!

Here’s how big it is. The PSP is an ‘original’ PSP (I think – if it makes a difference). As you can see, it is mostly screen (touchscreen – the stylus plugs in to the side), with a small ‘joypad’ style button next to the numbers.

这是一个‘正常的’PSP(我认为-可能有不同的)。

new phone shanghai fake market!

It’s not too thick really, around 10mm.

new phone shanghai fake market!

Here’s the back. Some ‘interesting’ writing on it…oh…what’s that you say? YEAH MOFO! It says TV!

It plays TV programmes! Like…5 channels! Minimum! Depending on where you are, you can get different ones. As you can see from the video, it’s also got a little stand which you can use when you wanna watch it but not hold it in your hand…why anyone would need their hands free when watching TV is beyond me…

new phone shanghai fake market!

You can also record from the TV! Although I’m not sure what you’d want to record…but still…good to know right? RIGHT?! It plays movies, mp3s, photos etc…and when you turn the screen around, it rotates the aspect of the picture (like those new iPod nanos).

It has character input (ok my hand was shaky) as well as the normal T9 dictionaries for loads of different languages (including Turkish! Holla!). You can also change the speed that the input ‘accepts’ each stroke, so no more ‘halfway-through-a-character-then-it-guesses-the-wrong-one’ problems. I know everyone has those.

new phone shanghai fake market!

It also has an extremely (uncomfortably) loud MP3/radio player (which I keep accidently setting off on the bus). Ah well…they hate me coz they ain’t me…

Now here’s the game…how much was this sexy piece of kit? Put your guess in the COMMENTS!

And no cheating…if you know the answer, don’t spoil it for everyone else!!!

Here’s where you can watch the vice-presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin, for free online:

Joe Biden v Sarah Palin – VP debate – MSNBC

It’s such a shame that the expectations for Palin were (justifiably) so low…it’s been a good case of managing expectations by the Republicans to be able to put a positive spin on such a bad showing. I guess when you’ve had 8 years of a crazy monkey man with the intellect of a potato, anyone looks like a better choice…

NCAA Basketball 2007/08 Superstars

The Next Big Thing?
After watching ESPN’s College Gameday preview show for the 2007/08 basketball season, three freshmen players were highlighted as potential superstars. The three players have all been given their own labels – the new Kobe, the new D-Wade….even the new Jordan. Let’s see what all the fuss is about…

Derrick Rose

Stats
Height: 6’4″
College: Memphis
Position: Guard
Comparison: Jason Kidd

Rose’s highlight videos have him doing a wide range of dunks, but his true value is in his lightning speed and foresight, able to dish in seemingly impossible situations. He’s a true playmaker, who also has the ability and fearlessness to drive to the basket at will. His perimeter shooting, once seen as his weak-spot, has been a strength in his opening pair of matches for Memphis – shooting 58% and carrying his new team to the semi-finals of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic (to be played on the 15th November).

OJ Mayo

Stats
Height: 6’5″
College: Univeristy of South California (USC)
Position: Guard
Comparison: Kobe Bryant

The hoops hype machine has been working overtime for Mayo, largely due to issues off the court. In January, after being ejected from a high-school game he allegedly assaulted one of the officials, earning himself a two game suspension. This ban was overturned after video evidence seemed to suggest the referee overreacted to what little contact there was between them.More controversy followed in March, when Mayo was ticketed by police for posession of marijuana. This charge was dropped when a (very rich in the future?) friend claimed responsibility for the weed, which had been found in a car that Mayo was riding in.On the court, Mayo is a monster. He has speed, great hands, size, vision and inside strength.

Kevin Love

Stats
Height: 6’10″
College: UCLA
Position: Center
Comparison: Dirk Nowitzki

Kevin Love makes the job of headline writers easy. Not just because of his name (marketability: A+), but because of the raw materials that he puts to good use every time he steps onto the floor. He’s a big (270lbs) centre with an eye for inch perfect, court-length outlet passes and a soft touch from the 3-point line. He is known as an NBA historian, and has grown up with some serious pedigree (his father, a former NBA player, had him watch videos of the Showtime Lakers as a child). His biggest weakness was seen to be that he was, at times, slightly sluggish, however he has cut down for the start of his college career and is now a danger both inside and out.Love was awarded High School Athlete of the Year in his final year, and he has started his college life the same way – with 22 points (two shy of a freshman record) and 13 boards (breaking the previous record of 12) in his first game for UCLA.
