Blackberry 8900 Shanghai (黑莓8900在上海)

So I made a snap decision and bought a Blackberry. It wasn’t the stereotypical snap decision (because it took me three weeks from the time it was made to receiving the goods) but all the same, it was a good choice.

I’m not going to tell you how much I love it or how amazing it is, because right now I’m using about 4% of its capacity (no push mail, no internet*, twitter slow, barely any apps). That said, I am taking advantage of its camera to document the LITTLE THINGS in my life which I have been neglecting recently.

Look here for example:

例如:

01-pens

I dropped my pen behind a cupboard at work, and so I decided to investigate behind it. Voila! 30 more pens.

02-groggy

I went to Ikea and saw this. Is it a joke? I know Swedish people are pretty funny – but…a corkscrew called ‘Groggy’?! It sounds like a Disney cartoon character!

03-187

Booyaka! I did it on purpose (of course)…

I will be sure to paste any more meaningful moments in my life right here in the blog!

Welcome to Shanghai (上海欢迎您 )

The last couple of weeks have been a bit of an eye-opener for me. A new colleague arrived in my office, and it’s made me cast my mind back to the first few weeks of my time here in China.

I was super-excited when I arrived in Shanghai 20 months ago – so excited that I totally ignored nearly all of the faults which, to newcomers, are often obvious.

The air-quality was atrocious (it’s ok, just hold your breath!), the weather was uncomfortable (that’s what aircon’s for!) and the hygiene of some places, like restaurants, leave a lot to be desired (but McDonald’s in Shanghai is so cheap!).

The one thing that was undeniable, however, was the friendliness and welcome of the people. Everywhere I went, I met people who were more than happy to show me around, give me info and generally help me out – which is why I’m so suprised whenever I see people who are clearly NOT friendly – like this girl:

01-don't

What sort of welcome is that for a lonely fresh-off-the-plane expat? I was considering having a word with her and trying to let her know that it’s not polite to be so abrupt with people…until I saw the front…

02-stop

…now that’s more like it! Welcome to Shanghai!

Calligraphy in Shanghai (书法在上海)

While waiting for a pair of VERY SLOW friends to get ready for a badminton game, I found myself in the ‘reception area’ of a block of flats near Wujiaochang. Every block of flats in Shanghai seems to have at least one (but up two three) people who hang around near the door almost 24/7, usually doing nothing.

The woman who ‘lives’ near the door of our flat is one of the most unfriendly people in the world. She never says hello, sits in the shadows and generally acts a bit like The Crow…

I was extremely suprised, therefore, when the two women in my friend’s block were very friendly! We chatted for a few minutes (Women: You’re tall! Me: Yes! Women: How tall? Me: 2 metres! Women: Really? Me: Yes! etc…) and then they told me they wanted to introduce me to a super-calligrapher, an 82 year old who was in the next room! Grabbing the opportunity, I went in…

welcome to shanghai calligraphy

…and he was busy drawing up some super-characters! I looked so scared…because I knew what was coming…he challenged me to a Pokemon-style calligraphy battle!

eagle eye shanghai calligraphy

…I scribbled away…emptying my vast knowledge of complex Chinese characters into the paper. I reckon it’s been about 12 years since I touched a paintbrush (1997 11DF QEHS Art class), so it felt a bit strange…

…but at least I made it to 12 characters!

Shanghai calligraphy master continues

He went back to his desk, and began training for the next round: BIG CHARACTERS! He drew out his 4 biggest and best, and then turned over the brush to me…

…I was in the zone…

calligraphy focus

My focus was so great that even the calligr-oupie couldn’t avert my gaze…

shangahi calligraphy side by side

And here was the final result…I’m banking on the ‘untrained eye’ to not notice any of the mistakes in mine :)

calligraphy letter writing competition

When we were done, the guy decided to write out a letter of recommendation for me to go and study in the School of Calligraphy in a Shaolin Temple somewhere on top of a mountain in the heart of China…

calligraphy team shanghai photo

…unfortunately it was only valid for 10 seconds before (using secret Kung-Fu powder and magic) it self-destructed. The chance gone, I decided to say my goodbyes to the team, and head out to the badminton court. I do have his phone number though, so if anyone else wants to do a calligraphy battle against him in Shanghai, let me know!

New Shanghai brothel (新上海妓院)

After uncovering the Shanghai Male Escort Service, I was even more shocked to find that a new brothel has recently opened right next to Hongkou Football stadium in Shanghai. I would never have known, but the shameless owner decided to give out namecards on the street!

shanghai-brothel

I decided to check the info, and sure enough…the title of the filthy establishment was right there for all to see!

shanghai-brothel

I couldn’t decipher the menu, but I think the majority of it just talked about ‘fruity’ and ‘juicy’ girls…disgusting…
