It’s now official – Facebook is a terrorist hangout (perhaps)

Due to what some see as draconian approach to media control, news stories don’t always come quickly to the mainland. Sometimes, however, the opposite is true!

I read a story in the Telegraph this morning which reminded me of something I’d heard many times before…but I just couldn’t put my finger on exactly where, so I did about 5 minutes of research and put together this super-timeline…

Facebook ban!

It was a shock when terrorism hit China before the Olympics…

August 2008 – Beijing Olympics security fears as terror attack kills 16 Chinese policemen

“The seemingly well-coordinated assault [...] appears to be China’s most serious act of political terror in more than a decade.”

“Ten days ago, a Muslim group which said it was fighting for the liberation of the region posted a video to a security website threatening to make the “most critical points of the Olympics” a target.

Riots in Western China saw more than 100 killed…

July 2009 – China riots: 156 killed in Urumqi as riots spread to Kashgar, according to Xinhua

“Calm had settled over Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang province, after 20,000 police, troops and firefighters reclaimed the streets from rioters who burnt and smashed vehicles and shops, and clashed with security forces over Sunday night.”

The Telegraph’s coverage was, as usual, accurate and well-researched…

August 2009 – The battle to scale the Great Firewall of China

“[T]he Chinese government cLose Weight Exercise/”>Lose Weight Exercised [...] Facebook four weeks ago. This is because the government believes the rioters in Xinjiang province on July 5 used networking sites to communicate.”

As well as this golden nugget…

“When expats move to China, the issue of internet access is one of the first culture shocks. The first surprising thing is that internet cafés do not exist.”

Earlier this year released a whitepaper about its block of FB and similar sites…

June 2010 – China defends censoring web

“Anything considered subversive or threatening to “national unity”, China said, would however continue to be blocked.”

And now today’s breaking news…

December 2010 – Facebook emerges as ‘terrorist recruiting ground’

“The US government has warned that terrorist groups like al-Qaeda are targeting Facebook as a prime recruitment ground.”

It’s hard for progressive techophiles to argue the virtues of unblocking this type of website (or at least question the reasoning of the censorship) when Western governments underline the same fears…and more than a year later!

Name.com has a feature where you can search for domain names by keyword, and then see how many Google searches there are for that particular term. I was checking out Facebook related websites when I found out a shocking fact….

name.com.fail

…Facebook is Norwegian! This ‘beta’ needs some more work…

…Facebook

I don’t know how it happened, but reports suggest that the first decade of the second millennium is about to finish. Crazy! I spent a year in France, two years in China, two years in Warwick University and five years in London – it all seems a bit of a blur! Some things, however, have been constant: Movies, music, video games, my computer and watching TV series. And booze.

With this in mind I want to present to you my awards for the ‘Best of the decade…’, in various categories. Some may be obvious, some controversial, some a bit stupid…but so be it.

I also invite you to put your own nominations in the comments in each category! Just copy and paste this in to the box before you type:

在这里我也希望你在回复里为每个类别写下你自己的提名!只要把这个复制黏贴到方框里:

Best movie of the decade
Best album of the decade
Best drink of the decade
Best website of the decade
Best PC game of the decade
Best Console game of the decade
Best TV series of the decade

Best movie of the decade – Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)

dude where's my car

Ok this might be a controversial choice, but hear me out. People often like films because of the atmosphere in which they first enjoyed them, and I think I’ve watched this movie more times than any other, with more cLose Weight Exercise/”>Lose Weight Exercise friends, in more places…and each time I never got bored or stopped half-way through. It’s the ultimate brainless dude comedy – and I love it.

Best album of the decade – Jay-Z – The Blueprint (2001)

Jay-Z The Blueprint (2001)

jay z the blueprint

The best rapper alive, the best beats, the best lyrics, the best mixture of radio / club / fight music ever put together. No need for guests (except Eminem, who compliments the mood perfectly), just hot hot hot music!

Best drink of the decade – Captain Morgan and Coke

captain morgan and coke

Also known as ‘WoW juice’ or ‘PVP fuel’, the sickly sweet and alchoholically potent brew is what hazed my mind for approximately three years and helped me develop (at age 25) an almost-immunity to alchohol. Good times. Three – glorious – years. (A cLose Weight Exercise/”>Lose Weight Exercise second is the Raspberry Mojito).

Best website of the decade – Facebook (2004 – Present)

facebook

After I left University in 2003, I became addicted to using Friendster and then Myspace. They were so refreshing – a new way to chat with and meet people from ANYWHERE in the world, almost instantly. They were fun for a long time, but both sites suffered from their own popularity and eventually became too full of flash widgets and glitter graphics. Facebook changed social networking by taking it back to its essence – communication. Now five (real) years on, it’s still #1 FOR A REASON!

Best PC game of the decade – World of Warcraft (2004 – Present)

warcraft

What can I say? It’s so good that you think about it all of them time. I mean…all of the time. Like when you’re at work. When you’re in bed. When you’re working in bed. When you’re in bed at work. All the time. If you play WoW and can control yourself, congratulations! If you’re in remission like me, just remember the good times…

Best Console game of the decade – Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (Playstation) (2000)

tony hawks pro skater 2

When I lived in Leamington Spa, I played THPS2. The first game I ever queued up for (and got a free mini-skateboard for it!), it was (and still is) infinitely replayable. So, so good – it made me fall in love with a sport that I have still never tried (and probably never will).

Best TV show of the decade – The Wire (2002 – 2008)

the wire

If you haven’t seen The Wire, then you won’t be able to understand why it’s not just the best show of the decade, but the best show ever. If you have seen it, you also know that every TV show you watch now is measured against it – and none of them measure up.

Now, it’s your turn! Write your nominations for the best of the decade in the comments!

The funny Facebook status, or how I miss updating my blue friend

If you’re not interested in the concept of a funny Facebook status, then please turn away now! I have been without the blue monster for so long that I’m craving some humour and some chat…help me!

funny facebook status

Some of you may know, and some of you may not know, but this site runs on the blood of Facebook. I got my first ‘hit’ internet article (that sounds so strange) writing about Facebook emoticons, and I feel like I owe a lot to the company in that it gave me the opportunity to talk to loads of people about different technology subjects (usually which I know nothing about).

Well today, that’s different – I’m going to write a bit about a new phenomenon which is sweeping the internet – the funny Facebook status. Let me preface this with a comment, I’m not claiming to be reinventing the wheel here, but I’m going to give you a list of some of the most amusing, cool, funny (and some downright hilarious) funny Facebook statuses out there right now. Some involve irony, some involve special characters and symbols, and some just include a straight up joke. Let’s check some out…

Funny Facebook status

Dalan is colour blind and thinks trying to solve a Rubik’s cube is pretty difficult…

Ok, let’s just admit it right off the bat, making fun of blind people (wait…colour blind isn’t really blind!) is not cool or clever (but it might make a couple of people laugh just a little bit).

Fiona ¡ǝɯıʇ ǝɯɐs ǝɥʇ ʇɐ ʞooqǝɔɐɟ ǝsn puɐ puɐʇspuɐɥ ɐ op ʎןןɐuıɟ uɐɔ

Ok I don’t think I have ever seen something as cool as this! All of the words are actually upside down! I think I saw a post about how to write characters upside down on someone else’s blog a few weeks ago, but right now all I can say is HAHAHA!

Jyrki is uploading a virus ████████████ 83%

I remember on MSN a few years ago there was one of those ‘sets of three’ emoticons which had an ‘uploading virus to you now’ thing on it. Made people crap themselves thinking that they would be infested with viruses soon! Now you can do it in your Facebook status – and you KNOW that there are fifty girls on your list who will message you asking if it’s for real…

Daisy is cle’a[ni.ng he'~r ke]yb36oa;rd

We’ve all done it, so why not share it! I actually haven’t cleaned my keyboard in months and it’s full of dirt and little hairs (no, not THAT type of hairs!).

Why don’t aliens eat clowns? Because they taste funny.

I have a colleague at work who is obsessed with puns, and this is the one I have heard him repeat most. Simple, funny and guaranteed to have people clicking ‘like’ on your status!

Anyway, these are my favourite funny Facebook statuses – let me know if you have any better!

Ladies and Gentleman, you’ve been waiting for a long time, so here it is – how to insert the brand new Facebook chat penguin emoticon into your Facebook chats! Ever since the Facebook shark emoticon was made available to the public, users have been going crazy guessing which animal or face that FB would provide for its loyal fans – well the wait is over! The designers have clearly been locked away in a special room for months, and they finally decided on…a penguin!

Free animated smilies for Facebook chat!
Why a penguin?

This is a tough question, as generally Facebook is not noted for the high frequency of penguins (or other animals to be honest), however this one could make good sense. The weather has begun to turn cold for the winter, and the Facebook penguin smiley could be just what you need to send your friends some emotion over the holiday season!

Anyway, I know that you are ready and prepared for it now, so here it is…

Facebook penguin emoticon

So cute, right? I can’t wait to use the penguin and the shark together…maybe make them fight each other to the death…or maybe just torment my friends by continually posting the new Facebook emoticon and making them beg me to tell them where I found it…well it’s just our little secret, ok?

You can, of course, find this emoticon on our Facebook emoticons page here on DJOD.co.uk, as well as every other smiley that is available online. The question is, can you wait to use it?! Enjoy the new Facebook penguin emoticon!

Tip 2) Get a free dog on Happy Farmer
To beat your friends you definitely need a dog to guard your plants and vegetables on Happy Farm on Facebook. The good news – they’re free! Just invite 5 friends who install the game. This is pretty easy because you can just ask your friends to accept the invite and click through the intro, and then they can forget about it.

Tip 3) Get free fertiliser on Happy Farmer
Plants on Happy Farmer grow faster when you give them fertilizer – you can get it free by inviting your friends to play with you on Facebook. A good cheat is to get your friends to sign up but then they don’t need to play – you get the free fertilizer. You can do this up to 5 bags per day!

Facebook has been redesigned, and here’s how to see the new look: go to http://www.new.facebook.com and log in with your email and password!

Facebook has been redesigned

The immediate thing I noticed was how wide the page is now, and how much white space there is! Gone are the hundreds of applications and widgets on the front page, with the now extended wall taking pride of place.

Facebook new look

Tabs along the top of each profile now group your different types of information – and thankfully there is one for ‘boxes’…which means that your 2,000,000 ‘buy your friend a chicken’ apps will be hidden from view! It’s like a super-Facebook-vacuum has just obliterated all the filth from everyone’s profiles…

New design for Facebook galleries

Photo galleries have been designed to be more intuitive (no more having to click three or four times to view someone’s gallery list).

Facebook wall redesign

Finally, check out how nice the wall is now! Different colours for comments and ‘actions’ (like joining groups and attending events). We’ll see how fast the people at Facebook roll out this redesign to the ‘live’ audience, but for now…have a look yourself! Remember, go to:

and log in with your email and password!

Comments in Facebook minifeed

facebook comments in minifeed mini-feed

Logging in to Facebook this morning, I noticed that you can now comment on individual Mini-Feed items. The comments stay on the mini-feed (minimized until you click on the ’1 comment’ (or whatever number) link) and then cascade out.

This is obviously one of the reasons for which Facebook now requires the Mini-Feed not be minimized…but will people start using this ‘mini wall’ to comment on friends’ items instead of the wall? And why would they choose to do this?

It also seems straange that a comment on a note in the mini-feed is not added to the note itself, which could lead to confusion down the line.

Comment away!
